Here's some trivia: The new Sugar House streetcar line will not have any stations at all when it opens in December.

"They will be called 'stops' instead," Dave Goeres, chief safety officer for the Utah Transit Authority, told the UTA Board on Wednesday.

The word came as the board approved names for the line's new stops on Wednesday. Goeres also told them that UTA will begin running test trains on that new line next week to begin certification of it.

But H. David Burton, the board's vice-chairman, interrupted Goeres to ask if it is appropriate to call vehicles on that new line "trains." Goeres corrected himself, and said they are "streetcars" and not trains, just as the stops are not stations.

"You're going to have to change your signs," Burton said, pointing to the sign Goeres was holding — used on recent new TRAX and FrontRunner lines — warning that test trains are running.

For the record, the names of the new stops on the line that will run eastward along 2220 South from the current Central Pointe TRAX station at 2100 South are: "South Salt Lake City" for the stop at 30 East; "300 East"; "500 East"; "700 East"; "Sugarmont" at 910 East; and "Fairmont" at 1040 East.

The 2-mile route is scheduled to offer service every 20 minutes. Daily ridership is estimated to be about 3,000 at opening, and is expected to grow to 4,000 by 2030.
