The Herriman City Council has selected firefighter Clint Smith to be mayor for the remainder of 2013.
Council members made their pick by a unanimous vote on Tuesday after interviewing three applicants for the job. Smith will serve until January, when the winner in the Nov. 5 mayoral race — either Michelle Baguley or Carmen R. Freeman — takes office.
Smith, 41, a battalion chief for the Unified Fire Authority, replaces Joshua Mills, who resigned effective Aug. 10 after serving as mayor for the 21,000-population city since 2010.
Mills, an insurance underwriter who is pursuing a doctorate in economics at Utah State University, said he was stepping down because of time constraints.
"My focus is to really work in a good cohesive manner with the other members of the council," Smith said Wednesday, adding that he wants to help establish priorities for Herriman.
Smith, who also is a member of the Herriman Planning Commission, said he plans to take a leave of absence from those duties while he serves as mayor.
