Chaffetz says mention in new book 'not cool'

Washington • Rep. Jason Chaffetz was none too pleased to see a private email he had sent a congressional staffer end up in a new book.

In the email, published in This Town by Mark Leibovich, Chaffetz lays into the staffer for not alerting him to a news story that fell into the Utah Republican's jurisdiction as head of a subcommittee over foreign operations.

"Some how, some way we are going to have to be better coordinated on this stuff," Chaffetz says in the undated email. "I find it unacceptable and potentially embarrassing for all involved."

The new book, subtitled Two Parties and a Funeral? Plus, Plenty of Valet Parking!? In America's Gilded Capital, takes an in-depth look at the ego-driven, clubby Washington merry-go-round, a storyline helped by congressional staffer Kurt Bardella, who forwarded the author several email conversations he had with reporters and members of Congress.

Chaffetz, who learned recently the book would mention him, said Bardella's action was "not cool."

"Very unprofessional and totally uncalled for," Chaffetz said Tuesday.

Bardella sent Chaffetz an apology note a few days ago, the congressman said.
