The House passed a resolution Thursday urging parents to take preventive measures against exposing young children to gateway pornography — though some lawmakers expressed concern the measure was "pointless."
Rep. Curt Oda, R-Clearfield, cited Supreme Court Justice Potter Stewart's "I know it when I see it" when asked by Rep. Brian King, D-Salt Lake City, what kinds of things parents should be shielding their children from.
King noted some billboards or advertisements could be viewed under that category and said that while "nobody is going to vote against this bill," he questioned what was trying to be accomplished.
The resolution, SJR15, passed the House 67-4.
Rep. Carol Spackman Moss, D-Holladay, said the debate was a waste of time.
"As if most parents don't know these things already," Moss said. "It's kind of an insult."
The Senate passed the resolution 27-0.
