First Published Mar 13 2013 10:09 pm • Last Updated Mar 18 2013 11:21 am

The Utah Senate gave final passage to a resolution calling to name the new federal courthouse in Salt Lake City after George Sutherland, the only Utahn who ever served on the U.S. Supreme Court.

It approved HJR9 on a 27-0 vote. The House earlier approved it 69-0. It asks Congress to make that name selection, and sent it to the Utah Senate for consideration.

Sutherland was appointed by President Warren G. Harding to the Supreme Court in 1922 and served there until 1938. Sutherland also represented Utah in both the U.S. House and Senate, and also served in the state Senate.
