The Utah House voted Friday to join a call to name the new federal courthouse in Salt Lake City after George Sutherland, the only Utahn who ever served on the U.S. Supreme Court.

It voted 69-0 for HJR9 asking Congress to make that name selection, and sent it to the Utah Senate for consideration.

"He did some amazing things in his career and was always a humble public servant," said Rep. Johnny Anderson, R-Taylorsville, the sponsor of the resolution.

Sutherland was appointed by President Warren G. Harding to the Supreme Court in 1922 and served there until 1938. Anderson noted that Sutherland also represented Utah in both the U.S. House and Senate, and also served in the state Senate.

Lawmakers would like his name placed on the new $226 million courthouse being built directly west of the Frank E. Moss federal court building at 351 S. West Temple, which will remain in place and house the U.S. Bankruptcy Court.
