Senate to consider Radiation Board nominees Thursday

The Senate is scheduled to vote Thursday on the confirmation of two new Radiation Control Board members.

Gov. Gary Herbert has nominated Matt William Rydalch and Lindsey Christensen Nesbitt to complete the nine-member board that was disbanded in May as part of a sweeping rewrite of the state's five environmental boards.

The radiation board re-formed in September without representatives from the radioactive waste industry and an environmental group. Those nominations were held up in a controversy over the nomination of an executive from EnergySolutions Inc., whose operations dominate the board's deliberations. For some critics, the company's inclusion on the board had the appearance of a conflict of interest.

Rydalch is a quality control engineer at the Ogden Western Zirconium plant, where nuclear-reactor parts are made.

Nesbitt teaches classes on global change in the biology department of the University of Utah, where her courses include sections on energy and pollution. She is a member of the Nature Conservancy and the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

Sarah Fields of the advocacy group Uranium Watch was nominated by the group for the environmental-group position, but her nomination was allowed to lapse after the flap over the industry representative.
