HB26 • Utah prison inmates could become organ donors if they die while incarcerated under legislation that has passed the Utah Legislature.

HB26, sponsored by Rep. Steve Eliason, R-Sandy, requires the prison to provide inmates with a donor sign-up form if the inmate requests one and provide the names of inmates to the intermountain donor registry.

The Senate passed the measure unanimously Thursday, sending it to the governor for his signature.

Eliason said he sponsored the bill because an inmate, whose passing was imminent, wanted to donate organs but could not because the law did not allow it.
