A bill that would allow state regulators to more swiftly discipline rogue professionals appears headed for swift passage.
HB51 addresses concerns raised in a legislative audit that found Utah’s Division of Occupational and Professional Licensing is slow to discipline professionals who violate the law or the terms of their probation.

"Really the only option they have now is essentially capital punishment, revoking someone’s license," which licensing boards are loathe to do, said the bill’s sponsor , Rep. Jim Dunnigan, R-Taylorsville.
Dunnigan’s bill would allow DOPL to directly impose lesser sanctions, such as small fines, on errant probationers.
It was unanimously approved by the Senate Business and Labor Committee on Wednesday and placed on the Senate consent calendar.
