Former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice will be in Utah next month to campaign for the Republican candidate for the 4th Congressional District, Mia Love.
Rice is expected to speak at a major public event in Utah County on Sept. 7, then attend a Love fundraiser that evening, the campaign said Monday. The time and location of the event is still being worked out.
Rice is the latest big-name backer to turn out to support Love, who is squaring off against Democratic Rep. Jim Matheson in the state's new 4th District.
In June, Rep. Paul Ryan, who is now Mitt Romney's running mate, helped raise money for Love. And two prominent Republicans will be in Utah this week to help her campaign — House Speaker John Boehner will speak at a fundraising luncheon on Wednesday and Arizona Sen. John McCain, the party's 2008 presidential nominee, will be in West Valley City for a public rally.
National Republicans and Democrats see the 4th District as one of the most hotly contested districts in the country. Rice has been raising money for the group ShePAC, a national political action committee that has endorsed Love's candidacy.
Rice was national security adviser and later secretary of state under President George W. Bush. She was the first African-American woman to hold either position. If Love is elected, she would be the first black Republican woman in Congress.
Since leaving the White House, Rice has gone back to being a professor at Stanford University and was floated as a potential Romney vice presidential pick.
