A Sandy resident filed a complaint this week with the Lieutenant Governor's Office that alleges Sean Reyes, a Republican candidate for attorney general, didn't report a $5,000 PAC contribution that went to him before his campaign was formalized.
The complaint was filed Wednesday by Kelly Smith and alleges Reyes got the campaign contribution from the Utah Freedom Defense PAC on Oct. 29, 2011. However, at that time, the complaint alleges, Reyes had not established a personal campaign committee as required by law.
"It was listed as a contribution when it should've been listed as a reimbursement," said Alan Crooks, a campaign consultant for Reyes. "It's a nonissue."
Crooks said the filing has already been fixed.
Reyes is squaring off against John Swallow for the Republican nomination after Attorney General Mark Shurtleff announced earlier this year he would not seek another term.
Mark Thomas, director of elections and deputy chief of staff for Lt. Gov. Greg Bell, said his office was in contact with the Reyes campaign Wednesday and has received a response. However, it was unclear if the filing had been amended.
The complaint also alleges the money was not reported within the 30-day filing requirement, though Thomas said if it is a reimbursement, that would cease to be an issue.
Generally, there are no penalties if the candidate amends the filing.
