A plan advanced Tuesday to replace white, roadside crosses as memorials to fallen Utah Highway Patrol troopers with safety warning signs, accompanied by a placard with the officer’s name.

The House Transportation Committee voted unanimously to endorse HB182 by Rep. Brad Wilson, R-Kaysville, and sent it to the full House.

Wilson noted that a prolonged court battle recently ordered removal of white crosses that had been memorials. His alternative, he added, would remember officers in a way that is legal, while spreading a safety message to help protect other officers.

The bill would place signs either in the area where the trooper died or in the community where the trooper lived. They would have safety messages such as "move over or slow down" when approaching emergency vehicles.

The signs would cost an estimated $20,000.
