The Senate passed Friday a bill designed to make it easier for companies to obtain "green" alternative electricity.

It voted 29-0 to pass SB12 by Sen. Mark Madsen, R-Eagle Mountain, and sent it to the House.

Madsen said some businesses have corporate mandates to buy a certain amount of energy from alternative sources, such as wind or solar energy. His bill allows them to contract directly with generators of such electricity and pay utilities such as Rocky Mountain Power to deliver it.

Madsen said regulations had blocked that previously. He said his bill calls for companies buying the alternative power to pay the full cost without subsidy from other power users. He said it will help some companies to locate in Utah who seek such alternative energy.
