Lawmakers are trying to limit campers to staying no more than 15 straight days in one spot on state lands.
The Senate voted 24-3 on Friday to pass, and send to the House, SB33 by Sen. Margaret Dayton, R-Orem. She said the move is designed to match a similar limit on federal lands.
She said it will help improve safety and sanitation. State officials have said that is particularly needed where people camp for extended periods around Utah Lake and on 5,000 acres north of Moab that the state obtained in a trade with Canyonlands National Park.
The bill would consider staying longer than 15 days as trespassing on state land and would be a class B misdemeanor.
