Campers would be restricted to 15 consecutive days in spot on state lands administered by the Utah Division of Forestry, Fire and State Lands under a bill advanced Tuesday in committee.
SB33, sponsored by Sen. Margaret Dayton, R-Orem, is meant to conform with camping limits on federal lands while applying them to the so-called sovereign lands below the high-water line of state water bodies. Division Director Dick Buehler said it's necessary to improve safety and sanitation, particularly where people camp for extended periods around Utah Lake and on 5,000 acres north of Moab that the state obtained in a trade with Canyonlands National Park.
The Senate Natural Resources, Agriculture and Environment Committee unanimously recommended the bill to the Senate.
