An ex-legislator, two former City Council members and a current councilwoman are among the 13 candidates vying to fill the remainder of late Orem Mayor Jerry Washburn's term.

The City Recorder's Office released the list of candidates Monday shortly after the noon deadline. At a special Oct. 24 council meeting, the council plans to pick a candidate to replace Washburn, who died in September after battling bladder cancer.

Among the candidates is former state Rep. Norm L. Nielsen, who was also the longtime head of the SCERA cultural-arts group. Nielsen also led the Miss Utah pageant.

Other candidates include Councilwoman Karen McCandless; former council members Les Campbell and James T. Evans; Cascade Golf Center proprietor Keven Stratton; former mayoral candidates Steven C. Golieb and Philip Hornberger; and residents Richard Brunst, Richard Jackson, Skyler M. Jeppson, Kyler Stephen Ludwig, Chris Nichols and Robert "Bob" Wright.

The council will meet to interview the candidates at 6 p.m. Tuesday. Each candidate will have three minutes to speak.

The council will meet again at 5 p.m. Oct. 24 for a closed-door meeting before voting on a successor for Washburn.

The winner will be sworn in at the Oct. 25 council meeting and will serve through 2013.
