Brian Doughty was sworn in as a member of the Utah House of Representatives Wednesday, filling the vacancy created by the resignation of Rep. Jackie Biskupski.

Doughty was elected Saturday by delegates to the Democratic Party's state convention to fill the remainder of Biskupski's two-year term, which expires at the end of 2012.

Biskupski, Utah's first openly gay legislator, resigned last month because she moved her family to a home outside the district she had represented for 12 years. House District 30 is in the Salt Lake City neighborhood around Westminster College.

Small-business owner Doughty is also openly gay.
