Six Democrats have signed up for next month's election to replace Rep. Jackie Biskupski in the Utah State Legislature's House District 30.

Biskupski, Utah's first openly gay lawmaker, resigned when she moved out of the district earlier in the month. And County Democratic Party Chairwoman Mary Bishop has recused herself because she also resides in the Salt Lake City-based district.

The slate of candidates include Nikki Boyer, president of the board of the Utah Pride Center; Charles Kimball, onetime member of the county party's executive committee; William McDonnell, director of the U.'s Center for Children's Environmental Health Law & Policy; Dimitri Moumoulidis, former executive director of the Utah Democratic Lawyers Council; Brian Doughty, who was formerly active in GOP politics; and Mark Towner, also a Republican turned Democrat.

"It's a real sign of our party's strength in Salt Lake County that so many qualified individuals have stepped up to the plate," said Richard Jaramillo, who is the county party's first vice chairman and has assumed the responsibility for administering the replacement election. "It'll be a competitive race."

District 30 delegates will hold an election to appoint a replacement for Biskupski during the Utah State Democratic Party Convention at the Salt Lake City Hilton, July 16.
