Outdoor Notebook: Banff Film Festival tour hits Utah

The 35th annual Banff Film Festival World Tour is coming to Utah, with dates across the state ranging from Logan to Moab. The tour annually features some of the best outdoor-related films in the world.

Here's the Utah schedule:

Feb. 15 & 16 • Orem, Utah Valley State College, Ragan Theater.

Feb. 17 & 18 • Logan, Utah State University Outdoor Recreation Center.

Feb. 19 & 20 • Ogden, Peery's Egyptian Theater.

Feb. 22, 23 & 24 • Salt Lake City, Kingsbury Hall on the University of Utah campus.

March 14 • Moab, Grand County High School.

Ogden Nature Center

The Ogden Nature Center, 966 W. 12th St., in Ogden is holding a "Winter Sleepers" program at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 16. What animals choose to sleep through the dark and cold winter? Learn about hibernation at this Wild Wednesdays event. Free to members, $2 for children, $3 for seniors and $4 for adults. Visit www.ogdennaturecenter.org for more information.

Free REI clinics

• Learn about the Alta Ski Patrol and meet the avalanche dogs that are a special part of the team at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 15, at the Salt Lake store, 3285 E. 3300 South, in East Millcreek.

— Michael Heathfield, a climber and REI employee, will recount his effort to climb Mount Denali last summer in an effort to raise money to fight breast cancer. The presentation takes places at the Salt Lake store at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 17.

— Learn the basics of snowshoeing at the Sandy store, 10600 S. 230 West, at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 17, as REI staffers help people pick the right gear and provide ideas on where to use it.
