Outdoor Notebook: Climb, hike or run to combat cancer

The 9th annual HERA Ovarian Cancer Climb4Life event is being held Sept. 16-19 in the Wasatch Mountains along the Salt Lake Valley. The educational and fund-raising event includes rock climbing, hiking and trail running. Other activities include a climbing movie night and a dance party. More than $1 million has been raised at HERA events to promote education and research to fight ovarian cancer. Participants raise money through pledges to climb, hike or run. Youth OHV training course

Utah State Parks and Recreation will be holding two off-highway vehicle courses for youth ages 8 to 15 at the Jordan River OHV State Recreation Area. The first will be held Sept. 11 and the second on Oct. 9. Students interested in registering for these hands-on courses must first complete and pass the online certification class. The hands-on OHV classes are free, but pre-registration is required by calling 800-OHV-RIDE. The three-hour courses offer training and instruction for correct turning postures, braking procedures, handling quick stops and swerves, riding over obstacles and traversing hills. A parent or legal guardian must attend the class with the student. All students must provide their own appropriately-sized OHV, helmet, goggles, and wear long pants, a long-sleeved shirt, gloves and over-the-ankle boots.

Ogden Nature Center

Sept. 8 • A class called "Wild Autographs" is being held at 3:30 p.m. Learn how to identify the amazing autographs wildlife leaves in nature. Free for members, $2 for children, $3 for seniors and $4 for adults.

Sept. 18 • The 25th annual Wildwoods Bash fund-raiser is being held starting at 5 p.m. Tickets are $60 per person. Events include dinner, live music and silent and live auctions.

Sept. 8 • Pomera Fronce is leading a trip to Oquirrh Lake at Daybreak in South Jordan. Fifty-four species have been identified since the monthly survey was started in March. 801-272-2755.

Sept. 10 • Kathy Coleman is leading a trip to the Provo Airport dike at 7 a.m. to look for uncommon birds during fall migration. 801-944-5773.

Sept. 11-12 • Combine a birding trip with a chance to see and hear bugling Rocky Mountain elk at the Hi Ute Ranch. Kim Roush will lead the trip both days with a 5:30 p.m. start on Sept. 11 and a 7 a.m. start on Sept. 12. 801-435-2976.
