The Legislature, in its great wisdom, decreed that voter registration was too simple. So they commanded that there be four different registration due dates.

If you register online (which requires that you have a Utah driver license with your current residential address), you may register until Oct. 28. If you want to register in-person at the County Clerk's Office, you may register until Oct. 27. For some reason known only to the lawmakers, if you mail in your registration, it must be submitted by Oct. 6. Why does it take a month to process something arriving by post? Oh, and in some counties you may register on Election Day.

And although it's true one does not need to show ID when registering if voting is done at the polls, that is not an option if you are one of the counties that is now voting by mail. For those counties, ID must be shown at time of registration (unless you are registering online, in which case your proof of ID was already submitted when you applied for your driver license).

So, voting in Utah is not quite as easy as it gets.
