Regarding Scott D. Pierce's article about the "This is Life" CNN spotlight on drug abuse among Mormons in Utah (Oct. 3), I believe that this is not a "Mormon" problem but a statewide and national problem. Answers need to be found. For example, many of the inmates in the Salt Lake County Jail are there for a drug-related problem. Many of them are addicts who are only dangerous to themselves.
Let's focus on getting drug addicts and alcoholics into drug therapy, drug court, alcoholics anonymous or some kind of rehab. Get them out of jail. We need to stop punishing people for their addictions (illnesses) and provide them with some real help. I don't believe that locking them up is the answer.
