I am appalled after reading the article ("Teacher Shoots Herself in the Leg," Sept. 11) that our state continues to allow people with concealed weapon permits to carry guns in public schools. The district says, "Student safety is our primary concern," and yet their hands are tied when it comes to keeping their students safe from their own employees who carry guns.

As a parent I cannot know who is carrying a gun at my child's school, as a principal, my husband cannot know which of his staff members are carrying guns at his school, because as the article states, "this could make them a target in an active shooter situation."

How often does this scenario really occur? And if it did, I highly doubt that a teacher who shoots herself in the leg is qualified to protect my child.

In my opinion, it is much more likely an employee carrying a concealed weapon permit would shoot my child. It is time to change this ridiculous law. There is absolutely no place for guns in our schools.
