Letter: How many more schoolchildren must die in shootings?
First Published Jun 13 2014 05:05 pm • Last Updated Jun 13 2014 05:05 pm

Two more people were killed in an Oregon school Tuesday morning. How many more must die before our Congress sees fit to develop meaningful regulation of gun ownership in the U.S.? How many more, Mr. LaPierre, must die before you will allow legislators to react to the will of the majority of people and not be cowered by National Rifle Association?

In schools alone, I count 22 dead and 28 wounded in 2013 and already in 2014 we are on a bristling pace to beat last year with 17 dead and 37 wounded with half the year still to go. The above count does not even include the horrific shooting in December of 2012 when 28 people were killed and two were wounded when a severely troubled young guy named Adam Lanza took a Bushmaster .223 assault rifle along with a couple of 9mm pistols to an elementary school.

How much firepower does a mentally deranged young man need to have to uphold the NRA’s view of the Second Amendment? How many more must die, Mr. LaPierre, before you wash the blood from your hands? How many more?
