I'm appalled at the bigoted, ignorant attacks on our civil rights published by the Salt Lake Tribune. The letter by Ron Lowe ("Show mayhem to stop it," June 3) is the latest in a string of ignorant, hoplophobic comments with no basis in reality.

He asks, "When is the media going to show the bodies of those ripped apart by these high-caliber bullets?" without offering any evidence that any bodies anywhere have been "ripped apart by ... high-caliber bullets."

Argument about the utter absence of high-caliber bullets in crime aside (what is a high-caliber bullet, Mr. Lowe, and why does the caliber matter?), why would anyone want death and gore spewed across the headlines? This ignorant, overemotional fear mongering and carnage worship has no place in a polite society.

Gun owners are normal people like you and me. They are your brothers and sisters, your neighbors. They are mothers, fathers, teachers, firemen, and community leaders. They vote and pay taxes like any other citizen. Research shows that gun-owning couples parent as well as other couples. They should not be built up as straw men and pilloried at the courts of frenzied, irrational public opinion. Why are you trying to take their basic human rights away?
