Letter: We don’t need to wait on same-sex marriage
First Published Jun 04 2014 07:34 am • Last Updated Jun 04 2014 07:34 am

Paul Mero continues to make the same mistake in his arguments against same-sex marriage. He is correct that most research shows that children of two parents do, on average, have a better chance to succeed in parenting to those of single parent households. As a society we should do everything we can, in caring and compassionate manner, to help these kids and their parent. However, we certainly cannot outlaw divorce or make being a single parent illegal.

Mr. Mero attempts to link this two-parent research to that of a household with same-sex parents. He shares no facts or reason to do so. In previous statements and papers he has referred to research that had shown that same sex parents are not as successful as other couples.

That research has shown to be either wrong or seriously flawed. Even Mr. Mero no longer refers to these studies. New research shows that same-sex couples parent as well as other couples.

He now writes that "None of these findings has matured empirically to make such claims." ("Debate on same-sex marriage isn’t over," May 27). Is he now suggesting that we wait another generation before granting the right of marriage to same sex couples? We need to do so now. They have been denied their rights for way too long.
