Letter: Stop unwanted proxy baptisms
First Published May 23 2014 06:43 pm • Last Updated May 23 2014 06:43 pm

With the approach of Memorial Day this coming Monday, I am reminded about what a special day this is for members of the LDS church. Members will go decorate graves and even perform postmortem baptisms for some.

I am not LDS, but I simply ask those that are to suspend the after-death baptism practice. I realize you believe you are doing good, but those you are baptizing did not want to be Mormon in life so why would they want to be in death, especially those who died for their faith like Anne Frank?

I understand your faith is extremely important to you, but so is everyone else’s. I can only imagine how offended you would feel if you found out a very religious and practicing family member of yours had been baptized after death into Catholicism even though they spent their lives loving the Mormon faith. It’s basically common courtesy at this point to follow the golden rule, and stop performing unwanted and unasked for baptisms.
