Letter: National edition? I think not
First Published May 02 2014 05:40 pm • Last Updated May 02 2014 05:40 pm

The current turmoil about the viability of The Salt Lake Tribune has reached my pediatric office. Several weeks ago someone from The Deseret News brought five copies of the newspaper’s national edition for distribution to interested patients.

I was not interested and recycled them; but they kept coming each week.

I decided to look at the paper (V.3/No.37) to ascertain its content. In the center was a copy of The Church News. Other "news" articles were:

• " ‘Normans’, Blog Aims to Show Just How Normal Mormons Are."

• "How to Raise a Moral Child."

• "Meaning of ‘Thou Shalt Not Steal’ Includes the Stealing of Human Life."

Then there were full page ads for the BYU Art Museum and smaller ads for Deseret Books, Dandy Blend (in compliance with The Word of Wisdom, instant herbal beverage with dandelion), an ad for Israel (the Lord’s Chosen People), a 13 Day Church History Tour Youth, Deseret Trust and Deseret Industries.

In the copyright section was a predictable disclaimer: "The Deseret News, although owned by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, is not an official publication of the LDS Church."

National edition? I think not.
