In reading an article in today's Trib ("ATV ride to send a message to BLM," April 17) I was not surprised to hear that San Juan County commissioner Phil Lyman plans another testosterone-driven swagger on small wheels so beloved among southern Utah county officials, this time in the beautiful and archaeologically sensitive Recapture Canyon.

I was, however, startled to learn that the Deseret News agreed to publish via a Lyman authored op-ed his invitation to the public to come along on the ride. Come stick a finger in the federal eye!

Wow, the DNews helping to advocate law breaking! How are the faithful to explain that one to the kids? Do I strike the 12th Article of Faith out of the tabula? You know, the one about being subject to presidents and obeying, honoring, and sustaining the law.

Is it 1850 all over again? LDS myself with nothing but pioneer ancestry, I always find it fascinating how so many of my co-religionists can hold dear such conflicting concepts: 1) they are super patriotic, and 2) they regard the Federal government with contempt. How do they reconcile the two? We are the government. Hate it, hate yourself.
