Letter: A teenager could solve school lunch problem with technology
First Published Mar 23 2014 09:56 pm • Last Updated Mar 24 2014 07:45 am

I have to respond to JC Smith’s letter, "Get over it, parents" (Forum, March 19) in which he/she chides "irresponsible parents" for ignoring payment due for school lunches. I have had children in the public schools for years. At the beginning of every school year, I put $200 into their school lunch account.

Each year, sometime in the spring, my children will let me know that their lunch money ran out and they had to go without lunch that day. That is my one and only notice that it is time to send more money.

Contrast that to my UDOT Express Pass account. When my balance drops below $10, I get an email every day informing me that my balance is low until I add more money to the account.

I would like to volunteer my teenage son to write a software program that would send out emails to parents when their children’s lunch accounts were getting low. I’m sure he could do it in an afternoon.
