Letter: Coaches should stick to basketball, leave God out of it
First Published Mar 22 2014 01:01 am • Last Updated Mar 22 2014 01:01 am

Virginia head basketball coach Tony Bennett commented in a television interview Sunday that he was "thankful for his faith in Christ" that helped his team during periods of struggle as they beat Duke in the ACC championship game.

I think we all agree that anyone’s God doesn’t root for any one athletic team. But the problem I have with players and coaches advocating their faith whenever anyone sticks a microphone in their face is that they are implying that their faith is somehow stronger or better than anyone else’s, maybe including the opposing team and coach.

That’s offensive. Besides, those guys are being asked to comment on the game and not advocate their faith in front of millions on television. If they want to advocate their faith they should find a reporter who will ask them to expound on it. Otherwise, stick to the script and don’t waste our time denigrating others.
