Letter: Failure to toughen penalty for cockfighting is disgusting
First Published Mar 22 2014 01:01 am • Last Updated Mar 22 2014 01:01 am

After reading that the Utah Senate wrangled too long to pass a bill making cockfighting a Class A misdemeanor, I was disappointed and disgusted ("Cockfighting bill is clawed to death," Tribune, March 13). It is incomprehensible to me how anyone would derive pleasure from watching pain being inflicted in such a brutal manner on any living creature.

It further dismays me that our wonderful state may be labeled a cockfighting capital. What a grim honor. We have been known for being champions in doing much good through volunteering and for many other accomplishments. Let’s continue to enhance our image, not detract from it.

Perhaps a fitting punishment for those who gain pleasure from this ghoulish "sport" is for the perpetrators to be assigned countless hours of serving on a children’s cancer ward. They just might learn that helping is far more rewarding than hurting.
