Letter: Utah has sadly cynical view on opposite-sex marriage
First Published Mar 18 2014 01:01 am • Last Updated Mar 18 2014 03:28 pm

Seriously? The pretty, great state of Utah believes that denying marriage equality to same-sex couples "is a rational way to promote interest in heterosexual marriage and foster responsible procreation that valorizes opposite-sex parenting" ("Utah filing: Gay-marriage ruling a ‘judicial wrecking ball,’" Tribune, March 15)?

What a sadly cynical view. Frankly, if enthusiasm toward opposite-sex marriage and parenting is as fundamentally weak as this argument seems to suggest, there is a far more significant problem than can possibly be solved by outlawing same-sex marriage.

Come on Utah, have a little more confidence that opposite-sex couples will continue to fall in love, choose to get married and desire to have children, with or without your "valorizing."
