Letter: Utah doesn’t live up to its image
First Published Feb 22 2014 01:01 am • Last Updated Feb 22 2014 01:01 am

The direction our great state is going baffles me. Utah has so many great things. For years I have heard "Utah — love of families, love of kids." The hypocrisy stuns me.

Why do we not better fund public education and preschool? One district intends to spend nearly $50,000 to improve its image after taking lunches from children!

We have laws forbidding under-age smoking and in public places. We perpetuate the smog in our air, the equivalent of smoking, by our behavior.

We allow disreputable adoption agencies to "steal" the rights of fathers by quickly placing children without proper notification. Are we so cavalier that we thwart father’s rights?

Why don’t we accept federal dollars and expand Medicaid? We know it is needed for the underprivileged among us.

Why do we not support changes to the immigration laws to assist the immigrant families that have supported our economy in positions that no one else chooses to do?

Reversing the right of gay marriage under the guise of it being better for families? The most chaotic families I know are in heterosexual relationships with ugly divorces and custody battles.
