Letter: Utah legal brief is a religious statement
First Published Feb 07 2014 01:01 am • Last Updated Feb 07 2014 01:01 am

The Sutherland Institute found Utah’s brief against same sex marriage "brilliant" and "impenetrable" ("State makes it all about kids in brief against same-sex marriage," Tribune, Feb. 4). I found it "cautionary and disturbing."

It struck me as just another statement by Utah’s religious/political establishment giving its opinion on a moral issue, saying why their opinion is superior to all others and why everyone else should have to adhere to it. I saw very little in the brief that had to do with constitutional law or precedent.

I’m a live and let live kind of guy. If a church doesn’t want to allow same sex marriage within its organization, it shouldn’t be forced to. If a same-sex couple wants to be married in a civil ceremony, let them. Keep it simple. I expect the Supreme Court will see it that way, too.
