Jim Green, it seems, forgets that our country fought a terrible and tragic civil war, which ended 148 years ago, to decide the very subject of his Public Forum letter ("Federal judge can't tell us what to do, Dec. 24).

The states are not, in fact, "sovereign" over the federal government, Washington D.C. and its judiciary. On the contrary, it is well-established in case law, that federal law always supersedes conflicting state law. Even more appropriate, state law, regardless of how it came to be, cannot infringe on the constitutional rights of any person or group of persons that are lawful citizens of the United States of America.

Enjoy your rights as a citizen of the greatest country on Earth, Mr. Green, as I'm sure all of those newly, legally, married same-sex couples are enjoying theirs.
