Letter: If trucks drive slower than cars, safety suffers
I read with great interest Norman Anderson's letter to the editor ("Exclude trucks from higher speed limit on I-15," Forum, Nov. 20). His argument to lower the speed limit for trucks traveling the interstate corridors in Utah ignores the inherent danger in forcing large trucks to travel at 65 or even 55 mph while cars travel at 75 or 80 mph.
The disruption in the flow of traffic caused by trucks moving at a slower speed could be found by his physicists as being more dangerous than all traffic moving smoothly at a uniform, though higher, speed.
The logical answer to this flow problem would be to lower the speed limit for all vehicles. This is a change I support, though I expect Mr. Anderson would not. It would turn an enjoyable road trip to Denver or St George into an exercise in mechanized somnambulating.
