I read with some interest Greg Miller's rant ("What was purpose of Trib editorial supporting black culture?," Forum, Oct. 31) on the recent editorial in the Salt lake Tribune. ("All Utahns should encourage black culture," Our View, Oct. 26).

First of all, everyone in Utah knows the Deseret News has been propped up by the LDS Church for years. I am opposed to any tax-exempt religious organization owning a supposed news outlet, be it printed or electronic, for obvious reasons.

I think Miller has the roles reversed when he calls the Tribune a "rag." The Deseret News is the subsidized pablum-delivering rag. I am a long-time Tribune subscriber but will quit my subscription if the Trib joins forces with the Deseret News. Independence would be gone. I'd just order the New York Times. The News has tried for years to hammer the Tribune because of the Tribune's circulation superiority and real news reporting.

Next time, Mr. Miller, leave the dictionary at home and don't try to baffle us with bull.
