If the hooligans who toppled the rock in Goblin Valley ("Men may face felony charges after toppling Goblin Valley formation," Tribune, Oct. 13) had committed a similar desecration in any other state or in a national park, they'd have already been arrested, arraigned and be in jail awaiting a bail hearing.

Hard prison time and demotions to Cub Scout would be just around the corner.

But in a state where most people probably think the rock is just 5,000 years old, they probably won't get the five years in jail they deserve. If, however, they had interfered with a public auction where other areas having great natural beauty were being sold off to be destroyed, then putting them away would be a no-brainer.
