Letter: Is racism behind hatred of President Obama?

For years there have been two main political parties in the United States that differ on how to govern the country. They always came to a compromise for the benefit of the country, until Barack Obama became president.

The main difference with President Obama seems to be that he is African/American. Is this why so many hate him?

Apparently around 20 percent of Republicans don't think he was born in the United States. At rallies of the right wing, the extremists of the Republican Party, the "tea baggers," will display confederate flags and other racist signs ("Utah's Mike Lee, others push through barriers to WWII memorial," Tribune, Oct. 13). A number of Republicans make very racist comments, as do the right wing media.

Apparently on the day of President Obama's inauguration, the leaders of the Republican members of Congress vowed to obstruct anything proposed by the president.

They even voted against women receiving equal pay for equal work.

Is racism the reason so many Republicans hate President Obama?
