Gov. Gary Herbert's offer to use state money to open Utah's national parks, monuments and recreation areas, and the Interior Department's acceptance, pleased me. This is the type of cooperation during crisis that has seen the United States solve problems throughout history.

However, it would be nice if the governor and the Utah delegation acknowledged how the federal stimulus package of 2009-10 literally saved thousands of jobs in Utah and helped state government perform its functions with care and consideration and without severe cutbacks.

The state's bond rating was assured and the ability to improve roads and provide infrastructure was enhanced. Cooperation and compassion are very good things.

F. Ross Peterson
