Letter: If shutdown not problem, maybe government too big

According to a Pew Research Center poll (broadcast on NPR on Oct. 7), 71 percent of Americans responded that they had not been personally inconvenienced by the federal government shutdown.

When the government trims 40 percent of its civilian workforce and less than a third of Americans notice, maybe we should consider whether we can afford 800,000 non-essential government employees at the same time that our country is in debt to the tune of $16.7 trillion.
