When considering the "Lawmakers in D.C. say gun control is not going to happen" article in a recent Tribune, it struck me that the real issue is a "re-branding" one. Those clamoring for gun control should take a hard look at the Right to Life movement. Although the aim of this organization is to control access to abortion, the term "control" is not found anywhere in the organization name. Instead of stating that you favor gun control, you should instead favor a Right to Safety or even the Right to Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness.
The goal is not to trivialize recent mass shootings but instead to offer the right for a safe society for everyone. We have settled into a sad ritual after a mass shooting: breathless reporting from all the 24-hour news channels, makeshift memorials to the victims, a denunciation from politicians of both sides, and finally soothing words from whoever is the current mourner-in-chief, but nothing changes and the cycle then repeats. Perhaps changing the "marketing" of the movement to focus on safety instead of control will end this sad ritual.
