Re: "Petless PETA," Forum, Sept. 19:

Working to stop animal cruelty and to promote a kinder, less-violent world should be commended, not attacked.

Even though PETA's more provocative campaigns tend to make the news, the organization is making a difference for animals at the source of the problem. It operates a low- or no-cost mobile spay/neuter clinic, builds and delivers sturdy and warm dog houses free of charge to low-income people who will not bring their dogs inside, and responds to tens of thousands of cruelty complaints every year.

They rescue animals in dire conditions and call for charges when people beat, starve and abandon animals, and PETA's undercover investigations have brought unimaginable institutionalized cruelties to light.

In a world where mass shootings are becoming routine and careless hunters are responsible for starting destructive wildfires, it is a mystery to me that anyone would speak out against compassion.
