Frederick Anderson's letter of Sept. 4 ("U.S. of Marxism," Forum) requires a response. He spent his 200 words bemoaning the Obama-liberal-Marxist conspiracy to destroy America. He made the argument that America is based on three supports family, religion and capitalism.
First, President Obama is a family man who attends a Christian church and supports the basics of capitalism. Second, Anderson's basic assumption is nonsense. America is based on freedom, equality, opportunity and, yes, diversity.
Families come in many forms. We each determine the form we prefer. The founders did not want religion to be determined or interfered with by government. Christianity was never intended to be a state religion. Capitalism is not mentioned in the Constitution. It is an economic system, not a political one, and though it is sometimes beneficial, it can also be horribly exploitive and abusive, particularly to the poor. It requires regulation or it destroys equality.
Ignorance is the greatest threat to our country. We need to read the Constitution and the other founding documents. Anderson's letter sounds like the nonsense being pushed on the naive, and might I even say ignorant, by the moronic cabal of wasteland radio (Limbaugh, Hannity, Beck, etc.). That's a real threat to America.
