Aug. 20 was Earth Overshoot Day, the date that humans exceeded, in just eight months, the planet's ability to replenish natural resources that should last us an entire years ("Overshoot Day," Forum, Aug. 24, by David E. Jensen). This should surprise no one.
In his letter, Jensen did not mention the main reason for our negative impact on the planet, which is overpopulation. If people don't wake up and limit the size of their families, everything will just get worse, including smog, overcrowded highways and orchards and garden spots being turned into homes.
Schools have already felt the effects of overpopulation. But when people can't get enough to eat, maybe, just maybe, they will realize what large families are causing.
