Oh, Rainer Huck, would you please stop? Build roads into current wilderness areas such as the Wave? Are you serious? ("Needless deaths," Forum, Aug. 24) For years, almost all my family has done in our spare time is off-road, either in our Jeep, or on our ATVs or dirt bikes.
Huck's rants feed the stereotype that all off-roaders are thoughtless, selfish animals with no respect for nature. I personally like the idea of wilderness areas places where it's quiet, where wildlife and vegetation are left alone. So be it that only the hardy hiker can make it there. Not every ATV rider can ride the trails we do, and a novice motorcycle rider such as myself couldn't even sniff the single track you ride on your dirt bike.
Besides, I have a hard time believing Huck would like to share his single-track trails with my quad. While it's sad when hikers die, cutting roads isn't the solution. I could easily lose my life with one inattentive move on my ATV.
That people could find and help me more easily would not prevent my death. So please stop politicizing these three hikers' deaths in order to further your personal agenda.
