Sen. Aaron Osmond and contributor Connor Boyack ("Compulsory education violates parental stewardship," Opinion, Aug. 10) are reminding us that education of Utah's children is the responsibility of the parents. I agree.
To that end I suggest that, rather than penalizing the schools when students are not reading at grade level, we put the onus where it belongs, on the parents. Instead of cutting school funding, we should cut the child tax exemption for each student who is not performing at grade level, and use that extra income to fund the schools and other educational opportunities.
That puts the parents in the driver's seat for a "no child left behind" initiative, right where it belongs.
