Thank you, Jeremy Beckham, for pointing out the tortured lives of pigs ("Livestock Abuse," Public Forum, Aug. 4).
In this society, where we apparently like to have pets, we also apparently don't mind turning a blind eye to facts regarding animals that end up on our dinner plates, also including chickens, which are among the most mistreated animals.
We also apparently like to wear and use animals skins (leather) and furs but are not aware of the tortures that may be endured by animals that are sometimes skinned before they die, both in the United State and places where most our clothing comes from, such as China.
It would be a kindness to earth's inhabitants if we put more thought into what we eat and wear. Going vegan is not a joke. It is not a practice of skinny hippy types with long hair and flip-flops, but part of a healthy, caring lifestyle.
