At the June 5 work meeting of the South Salt Lake City Council, a city leader told us the total amount the city lost in its failed attempt to buy Granite High School. Councilmen John Weaver said, "We lost 2 million bucks ..., and that's a tragedy."
A tragedy for whom? It's not a tragedy for Mayor Cherie Wood or members of City Council, who are still receiving their paychecks. It's a tragedy for the taxpayers who live in this small, poor city.
Who is accountable for this loss of taxpayers' money? Wood and most of the City Council will not take the responsibility in an election year. Too many elected officials make decisions that they run from when things go wrong.
To take the responsibility for one's decisions is the sign of a good leader.
